They are known as “staters” from the Greek meaning “weight” and is a term using to describe ancient coins. It is thought the Celts copied the idea from the ancient Greeks as there are stylistic similarities between the two. Historians believe initially gold coins were minted predominately as war money. They were used to pay troops, pay tribute and in diplomacy. Most people in Iron Age Britain still used barter for everyday trading, or were beginning to use the new low value base metal coins, but gold coins were something for the rich. They were minted by tribal leaders. Gold coins were likely thought of as the local “king’s” money.
Ruler, issued coins in Southern England during the late pre-Roman Iron Age, circa AD 10-40.
He is known from coin legends, where he sometimes uses the Latin title REX (‘king’) and possibly from historical sources. It is very likely that the Verica named on coins can be identified with the ‘Berikos’ mentioned by Cassius Dio (LX, 19), According to Dio, Berikos was driven out of Britain and fled to the emperor Claudius in Rome, who used this incident as an excuse for the subsequent Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43, Verica is associated with the Atrebates, one of the’civitates’ (administrative divisions) of the Roman period, that are thought to have been based on the political groups or tribes of the Iron Age. He is also explicitly associated with the pre-Roman and Roman period settlement of Calleva (Calleva Atrebatum, Silchester) in his coin inscriptions. His coin inscriptions also suggest that he was one of the sons of Commios (q.v.).
The Celts created many different types of coins, with over a thousand types known from Britain alone. A very small number of these can be tied to historical events, or people, but in the main Celtic coins are really all about the art. Unless you already have a particular affinity to something Celtic, such as the Iceni tribe, or king Commios, then your best way of starting a collection is to look through books, auction catalogues and dealer’s websites, and just find what catches your eye. The standard advice of “collect what calls to you” is particularly good when it comes to Celtic coins.
Buying every pretty coin that comes up for sale can become prohibitively expensive, so here at Lockdown Competitions we can offer these Iron Age Celtic Coins up in competitions giving everyone the chance to own these great valuable pieces of history for a few pounds.
